Take a hike in the woods behind the hospital and you’ll find the old water tank, now covered in massive amounts of impressive graffiti. Tom Maat of Michigan’s Otherside dreamt about the area before even seeing it. Being sensitive to the other side his whole life, a shudder came through him when he walked up a wooded trail behind one of the hospital buildings and saw the brightly painted water tank.

A few weeks prior to visiting Traverse City with the goal of walking around the grounds of the hospital, Tom had had a strange dream about a person trapped inside of a large water tank. As he explored the tank at Traverse City, he had an urge to climb on top of it. Finding a tree near the tank that looked as if it had been used as a ladder, Tom hoisted himself up and was startled when he found two kids sitting on top, hanging out. He began a conversation with them. They pointed out the ladder going down into the tank. Tom looked down into the murky bottom. Old shoes, garbage and other kinds of refuse lined the floor of the tank. But something kept tugging at him to go inside.

Tom climbed down the ladder into the dark water tank. Not wanting to touch the disgusting, stagnant shallow pool of water below, Tom held on to the ladder with one hand and moved his video camera around the place with his free hand. “Is anyone down here with me today?” Tom asked. As if someone had been waiting for him to ask that, something banged on the inside wall of the tank. The kids and I were sitting on top of the tank, not moving around, and no one was on the ground playing a practical joke.

Tom practices Ama Deus healing, a form of energy work that can help sprits move on. After doing what he was taught to do, Tom feels that whatever was trapped inside the tank was set free that day.
